In recent days, there is a strong desire in my heart for the revival of a good old-fashion hymn sing! I didn't know then the work God was doing as he delicately weaved His truth into the foundational fabric of my life through century-old words penned from Christ-followers so long ago.
If you take a moment to read the words of hymns of old it does not take long to recognize that the same struggles of brokenness and sin burdened those who came before us. Yet, more importantly, the precious words penned are a testimony so powerful and poetically framed of unwavering hope and belief in the redemption and transforming love of Christ.
Though we may think our world is far messier than ever before, it has been good to remind myself of those who have gone before who have faced uncertain times, even pure evil. At all cost, those who refused to deny Christ and the infallible and life-giving Words of scripture experienced God in profound ways that strengthened their resolve and faithfulness to Him alone.
The closer I walk with Christ in fellowship, prayer and the study of His Word, the more my heart is free from the chaos, the confusion, the chains and burdens of the here and now.
Helen L. Lemmel penned the words and music to a now well-known hymn that reflects well a heart that rests securely, tenderly and confidently in the arms of Jesus...
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.
Indeed, this world has become strangely dim.
